So what I need is almost the opposite. I need an all steel gun with a 3 inch barrel, front night sight, 9-10 pound trigger pull, full hand grip.

The answer to my needs comes in the Ruger SP101. But did I have to send it to Gemini Customs for the $459.00 treatment? Read on! But first, compare the S&W 637 to the 2.25- and 3-inch-barrel Rugers.

Let's start with the clamps. Filling my hand and getting a proper grip is key. What I've found is that not having full grip on the handlebars can negatively impact accuracy, spin control, and pain relief. If your hands don't quite touch, that means there will be gaps in various places between your hands and the handle. These gaps are non-grip control areas and give the handle room to reach your hand. Also, I have a partial grip on my pinky that gives me room. This is another grip control point that improves accuracy. With a grip that's the right size and fit, you'll feel the nib twist and push in your hand, but with the right fit, you'll eliminate the slapping of the middle finger and palm.

Grant Cunningham recommended a Pachmayr grip for the SP101, and since he's a "Revolver Expert" I knew he couldn't steer me wrong. The SP101 is very well configured out of the box, but could do with a little improvement. $34.00 for a Pachmair grip is money well spent. The grip is slightly longer than the Ruger grip, giving my fingers a little room. They also fit my hand very well, with no gap between the hand and the grip, and the textured synthetic grips have a better "feel" than standard Ruger grips.

Obviously I chose the 3 inch barrel because it is more balanced and allows for a larger radius and increased velocity. For sights, I chose a Meprolight front night sight.

It provides a better image in all lighting environments and is very "elegant" from an aesthetic point of view. The Gemini Customs SP101 had an XS Big Dot night sight that looked a little odd and helped light the gun up a bit.

The three-inch barrel and all-stainless steel construction add more weight, which dampens recoil. At 27.2 ounces, the 3-inch SP101 is nearly twice the size of a Smith & Wesson 637, and trust me, that's a good thing. I don't think the extra weight will hinder concealed, all-day carry. Weight isn't an issue if you have a proper belt and holster, including a pocket pouch.

That leaves us with the trigger. The trigger out of the box was better than any S&W "J" frame pull I have ever experienced. But I knew I could make it better. Fortunately for me, the gunsmiths at Bill's Gun Shop in Robbinsdale, MN are experts in trigger guards. They offer several options for working on the trigger. They can give you an incredibly light match trigger, or give you a heavier "safe harbor" than a match pull to prevent you from carelessly lowering your gun when you're in a shooting situation. super reliable. With some competition triggers, you'll find that the pull is so light that it's not heavy enough to reliably strike with the power required to fire all types of primers in a variety of cartridges. When the gun was returned to me, it had a buttery smooth 9.5 pound double action trigger and a 2.1 pound single pull. This trigger is amazing!

So was the extra work I did on the SP101 worth it and how much did it cost? In my opinion, yes, it was. The price for the grip, night sight, spring, mount and trigger was $144.00. That's $315 less than what I sent to Gemini customs and had to wait about once
