New Mexico residents will begin receiving their latest round of tax rebate checks as early as next week in a state effort to offset the impact of rising U.S. prices.

The state legislature and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham approved rounds of rebates and financial relief this year, according to the New Mexico Department of Taxation and Revenue. Citizens received stimulus payments in May and June, but this new round will differ from those that came before in that the tax breaks are subject to a certain income threshold, Albuquerque's KRQE reported.

Inflation hit a 40-year high in May, putting enormous pressure on President Joe Biden and state leaders and lawmakers to act to offset rising costs. Americans have been hit particularly hard in the wallet when paying for gas, food and travel.
The New Mexico Tax Department's information page specifies that married couples filing joint returns, heads of household and surviving spouses are eligible to receive a $500 tax credit in July, but they must have incomes under $150,000. Single and married persons who applied. separately from their spouses are eligible to receive $250 rebate checks, but they must have incomes below $75,000.

Eligible taxpayers who have submitted a 2021 personal income tax (PIT) return will automatically receive the rebates without having to complete an application.

"New Mexicans who have or will file their 2021 income taxes by May 31, 2023 do not need to take any action to receive their rebates," the department explained on the site. "They will receive it automatically by direct deposit or check, depending on how they received their refund or made their payments."
In 2022, the state legislature approved $20 million to distribute on a first-come, first-served basis in relief to citizens who did not file tax returns. Households with married couples or single persons with one or more dependents were eligible for a relief payment of $1,000, while single persons without dependents were eligible for $500.
Applications for those relief payments opened on May 2 and would have closed on May 31 if the $20 million didn't run out beforehand, according to the department. While it is too late for New Mexicans to apply now, those who applied and were approved should expect to receive checks or direct deposits this month by July 31st.
"This summer, we will return hundreds of millions of dollars in emergency aid to New Mexico families, protect their paychecks and help them cope with the rising prices of gas, groceries and other household expenses," Grisham said in a statement.

New Mexico will now give individual adults $500 checks, with households receiving $1,000 payments after the bill is approved by the US state.
The Senate voted 35-1 and the House voted 51-13 in favor of the new relief package, one that will reportedly distribute about $700 million to New Mexico residents.
Seniors with little or no income, as well as undocumented immigrants, will also receive payments from the state to help those struggling financially due to inflation.

Republican state representative Randal Crowder expressed his uncertainty about whether these new checks will be beneficial to New Mexico citizens in the long run.
"It's going to put more pressure and pain on people who won't be able to handle it. We're throwing gas on a roaring fire."
According to the Legislative Finance Committee, as many as 490,000 New Mexicans could potentially receive $500 each in tax credits after the passage of the bill.
"Our state's productive budget surplus allows us to provide much-needed financial relief to our citizens as they face the ripple effect of these costs," said State Representative Christine Chandler.
New Mexico Passes Its Own Child Tax Credit
Citizens filing their taxes individually will get $500 split into two installments, while couples and heads of households will receive a total of $1,000, with the first payment in June and the second check coming two months later in August.
